Welcome lee :)

Proclone is probably the expert on this, as the geometry of your model will dictate where and how your skin is applied across its surface.

You will need either JASC PaintShopPro or Adobe PhotoShop to actually design your skin. You create your skin in the form of a TrueVision Targa (.tga) file in 24-bit color depth.

In addition, you will need the nVidia DXT tools which contain a plug-in for those programs - this plug-in allows you to save your skin in the Direct Draw Surface (.dds) format which the game uses. They are available from nVidias developer section on their site, and I think CNCDEN had them up under their Renegade section.

You can see more info in a post I made here;-

This seems to be a main choking point right now. Everyone has seen 3D models and generally anyone can make a 3D model (now how GOOD it actually is is dependant on skill, but everyone can grasp teh principals of making the model nevertheless)

However the next CRUCIAL step it making the model's skin. And people always skip ahead to photoshop once their model is "done" not realizing they've missed the most important part of the modelers role in skinning.

Creating the UVW map.

I'd try to explain it here but since I've gotten at least 3 people indirectly asking about this over the past week I've bit the bullet and started a gmax/renx tutorial. It should be done pretty soon and it covers the BASIC concepts of how you can do this in gmax. [pokes Deezire, get on ICQ I need to talk to you :) ]

There we go. That _should_ help you start out with your custom skinning.

We just told you how to do it for yourself and pointed you at some detailed tutorials.

If you want to recruit for your mod team, either do it from your site or in the Community Forums :)
