We would really need to get permission to release those. We both signed, literally, a rather air tight doc stating we wouldn't, shouldn't and won't release any material from the pre-release versions unless we get expicit permission from EA.....I'm working on Harvard now.

Yea, I was kidding about deezire releasing the things...I know full well of the pretty stern things you have to abide by. Anyways...you should work to get harvard to release some of those editors you guys used :)

To be honest, there wasnt a great deal (in terms of art and sound assets) from the alphas that wasnt in the beta anyways (if anything). In either case, the builds we had were heavily protected, could only run on the machines we were supplied with, and went back to EA upon completion, so I dont have them now and if I did I couldnt actually do anything with em :(

Given that 3000 official testers had it and modded it, then 20000 FilePlanet bods got it, not to mention the warez munkeez and the people who got it on eDonkey etc, it wouldnt in the least surprise me if most of those things from the beta ended up on the web somewhere anyways, if theyre not already. AFAIK, the FilePlanet people didnt actually have to sign anything to get the beta (a friend near me got it and he simple d/l'd it off them).

Ive already seen somebody posting screenies of the old Crusader on the Official Modding forum (and it wasnt me!!) so theres one person who kept hold of it :D

DZ, I was thinking of the OLD ABBattle lab and some of that really old stuff that was pulled after build 147. I have a ton of that stuff. I still have the machine AND both encryption devices. The machine is a POS and I ended up using mine after the CPU and MOBO went TU. They don't want it back at the moment...can't imagine why

I remember that - theres enough there for a complete new side if you really look - try ABWarFactA9 for a nice demolition effect ;) Theres even a Supply Truck and Dozer that went unused from the days when all sides were going to have Supply Trucks.

Remember the old Secret Lab? That was cool and IMO it still kinda fits with the game :) LOL, it was the only Tech Building we had then so every map had birds and a Secret Lab hehe :D

The list of stuff is potentially endless - a real goldmine for modders. When Harvard hosted that dinner in LA for modders, I couldnt get there at the time but Chris handed him my notes and I actually suggested releasing WB and the other utils such as GUIEdit on a seperate CD along with all the unused assets, bit like what they do with some FPS games. No luck though.

Issue is, if you consider what was in the beta (and earlier builds) like POW Trucks, Prisons, the Tech Radio Station, Tech Caves, GLAs Power Generator etc etc etc and people who still have those assets go ahead and use them - what happens if those things were being 'kept back' for the expansion?

Id love to make use of those things, and without being too emotive about it if somebody with the beta (say from the FilePlanet subscriber population or otherwise) uploaded those assets and/or used them for their mod, or even sent them to me, then I would use them too. Much better to use official looking stuff than try for too long to do it yourself when its already made ;)

You have to question some motives sometimes - when only 3000 out of 23000 ppl signed not to do that, and then the warez/filesharers got hold of it, its inevitable that those assets will go public (as some already have). They even released the unused Renegade stuff (its still on the WW FTP). AFAIK, the beta is still on eDonkey, Overnet and KaZaa.

IMHO, if its never going to be used, give the modders the chance to make use of it. If I had it my way, everything from build98 upwards would be up here now. My mod at home makes use of those things anyways and you cant help but think it looks and plays like an official add-on - that can hardly be a bad thing for the game? It would be bad to see mods littered with sub-quality/poor images (due in part to lack of expertise) and Generals deserves better than that.

On another note - there was a call on the official boards for a feature that allowed you to redfine the keys and remap the keyboard. Well, after many a late night session with WordPad Ive managed to stick a wnd file back in the game that enables it ;) It still needs a LOT of work but I didnt even need GUIEdit (entirely WordPad believe it or not) as the code to support it is still in the game.

I found that a bit odd myself. It should be standard. One of the reasons why the game seems a bit rushed. The gameplay and ingame graphics are definitely a plus though.

I could post some of the beta files once I find time to look through and extract the interesting stuff.

I have a been in touch with Harvard about some other things (.wak files) I'll ask him about the old assets and GUIEdit, etc.etc. The old Strategic center would be a good one ,and there isn't anyway it fits in with USA side now. AMF, your right . Most of the old USA stuff could be used for an entierly new faction....I'm thing Euro.

I still think the issue of using assets from the beta is academic - it was so widespread, its only a matter of time before people use them anyways.

The alpha stuff is a different ballgame though - anyone who even saw that is tied to a stern agreement, so as RV says permission to use those things would not only be necessary but prudent and polite ;)

then why dont you ask "prudent and polite"?;) :D

I would have no problems giving out the MP test files except I have only a crappy geocities website, which wouldn't last very long with those files.

Alot of people here use file sharing programs such as Kazaa ( or kazaalite ) you could just "put the files up" ( though they're stored locally I know ) and give them a recognisable name and let a few copy off you. Just post the file name and poeple could do a search and find them ;)

E-Donkey / eMule would be a good choice aswell.

if you guys give me the file name, i could extract them from the Beta..
i downloaded it from fileplanet, (got a subscription for it :P ) and didnt sign a NDA. So, just hand over the names >:) and noone will get hurt :P
