Can you make a unit in 3ds Max 5 that is completly skinned, then export it to Gmax and convert it to the .w3d format? Will it be skinned in the game correctly, once you implement it?

Yes... sort of :)
You can mke everything in 3rd party programs (anything other than Gmax) and import them into Gmax so long as you find an import script for the filetype your program uses.
In the case of 3D Studio Max you'd use .3ds and use the File>Import>3ds importer (since 3ds is by discreet they were nice enough to include importing 3ds files natively in Gmax 1.2 Before v1.2 you had to use a script)
The only thing about doing this is that once your model is in Gmax you'll need to reapply your materials so that they're proper w3d shaders (only possible in RenX).
But yes it's entirely possible to model>Skinmesh your model in another progrem, then bring it into RenX for w3d export purposes.
