Making games is a VERY expensive business, because they also make enormous profits. (if you score a world hit, that is)
Buying a game engine is usually counted in the hundred thousand’s, if not millions of dollars.
If you know that discreet easily asks around 200k to license the GMAX DEV , development version of Gmax, you'll end up with numbers that make your head spin.
This year’s total revenue of the games industry was bigger then what Hollywood produced....


I know of a team of enthusiasts that started working on a game (garage programmers type),. After a few months it was stopped dead in its tracks, because calculations showed they needed 5mil$ to cover wide world release, across different platforms (pc, playstation, etc) It is impossible to release a game on your own these days. The game distributors control the whole market....
