if a bipedal system is sooooooooooo bad for fighting, howcome human kind is still at it? its because we are varied in the tasks we can perform, highly agile, and can go fast when we need to, much like a bipedal mech can, if you give it the right stuff. Can you imagine how the iraqis would feel if they were 'liberated' by 20ft tall mechs with huge cannons and missiles? do you think they would offer much resistance? hell if you wanted too, you could make a bipedal mech move faster than a plane, able to do more destruction, and be able to take some serious fire and still stand. thats because they are a good platform to base things on. if they meet an incline, just rotate the feet! just like you do when you walk up a hill. If you need to fire a huge weapon with major recoil, go down on one knee, just like you would if you were to fire a rocket launcher. 4 legs is not such a good idea, as they are slower, more complex to keep balanced when moving, but they can carry a lot more stuff. but i have to agree with you that tracks is still the best way to go.
