thats true, both those games are well detailed, but you yau have to remember that they are also console games playin on a tv, at only about 640 x480 resolution, which eases up on the machine substancially.
I agree with Guyee, 50000 is about the total poly count of a games entire scene, adding even a single new unit with another 50000 would be a big slowdown if not a crasher.
now adding a couple 100 polys to a single model that maybe you just want to create more focus on and will ther only be a few in the scene at a time may not be a problem. iv done that, but if you want to make a mod meant for everyone to use, no one will like it if it plays to slow.
