well i did that method in the stickied post, it was umm this MAXscript think that did some stuff lol

you select the polys, then attach em, then detach em then clone em, then unfold em, then arrange them, then apply a planar map. Then attach em all together, then make editable mesh - and add the modifier UVWunrap..
