Like a tank turrent in the shape of a +/x shape? or like just a +/x in the texture file?

if its just the shape you set the sublevel to polygon and select the faces/polygons that make up the shape and deattach it. I still don't fully see how it cuts polycounts since deattaching it will still be the same number of polygons.

If you wanted it to be a texture, you could just model it out because it might actually be faster. Alpha map calculations aren't very friendly stuff. I guess it would work out okay, but I'm a usability guy, and a small +/x thing isn't a great way to identify a player's unit IMHO.
