Default NEWB QUESTION: How do you access .INI files and which ones.

This is a newb question. How do you access the .INI files to edit units stats and building times and the likes??? Which tools do you need and which files are in question.

Yes this is a very n00b question, but you need big extracter to extract the ini files, and it is crucial to larger mods where you want to change the graphics. which ones you need to extract depend on what you want to change, so post that first.

ok use XCC Mixer to extract the ini files from INI.big (http://xccu.sourceforge.net) than when you edit a file use notepad or wordpad depends on size of file than once edited place the edited file in Generals/Data/INI/file.ini but for all Faction files they go into Generals/Data/INI/Object/file.ini

also here:
FactionUnit.ini has all the infantry and vehicle stuffs like cost and build times
FactionBuilding.ini is the same as Unit just for buildings
than the rest are self explanitory like weapon.ini is for weapons and superpower.ini is for super weapons

hope that helps

Personally, for file editing, i prefer Ultra Edit 32, just cause you can search through multiple files, have all the ini's open and such, and even compare files..... Good stuff

Also just incase you dont want to dl alot of file you can get the simple extracotr such as XCC that Lt Zack mentioned and use your computers notepad to alter them.

IF you get the XCC Extractor you need Version 1.24 for Generals. MUST get 1.24.

Older versions wont get what you need.

yeah XCC I think by far is the best utility for all C&C games. And personaly I stick to wordpad and notpad as that is the old way of doing it and I like it

Yeah, notepad is the hardest to learn coding program, but also gives the best results.

Ok I got XCC Mixer 1.25. I viewed the .ini files in INI.big. I got a guide on which .ini files do what. Now what do I have to do to apply them. The XCC mixer doesn't allow you to edit them. I know it can't just be a view-only program. How do you edit them then apply them to the game.

I need step by step instructions please. I have 1.25. I also made a backup copy of INI.big as a precaution.

well, not having experience with XCC i cant say, but basically what you need to do is extract the whole contents of the ini.big file to a folder designated for them. not that in the ini big file there should be a few different folders, extract the contents of each of those to a different location.once you have the files extracted, you can go about editing whatever and however you please, and to apply your changes to the game, go into the generals directory, find the data file and create a file in there called INI, so the pathway should look something like Generals/data/INI. also, any of the object inis go in Generals/Data/INI/Objects.
