Seems that you haven't declared the object in the INI as a Muzzle Flash, so Generals don't find him to make it transparent between shots.

add it in the FactionUnit.ini, the name in RenX must be the same than in the INI

for example :

DefaultConditionState
.....
WeaponMuzzleFlash = PRIMARY MuzzleFX
WeaponMuzzleFlash = SECONDARY NONE
.....
End

How come I'm still crap at modelling and can't make myself a thing that looks like a vehicle after a week of practicing with it?

Ok, ok, you're right

I was just saying that it covers the main things you should know when you already know gmax.

If Im using the standard code for the humvee just to test it the code will look like this:
ConditionState = NONE
Model = AVHUMMER
Turret = Turret
ShowSubObject = Turret
HideSubObject = TurretUp01 Housecolor03 MuzzleFXUP01
WeaponFireFXBone = PRIMARY Muzzle
WeaponMuzzleFlash = PRIMARY MuzzleFX

End

What do I name the (flame) Muzzle effect?
Muzzle? or MuzzleFX? or PRIMARY Muzzle or PRIMARY MuzzleFX...
I think I've tried them all hey...

Wayne I think you might have stumbled onto a similar issue as Blitz 2 's Maus.. it has some odd issue with it's muzzle flash similar to what you've described.

If you'd be so kind as to tell me the EXACT name of the material you're using for teh muzzle flash and the exact naming of the Muzzle Flash boneobject.. We might be able to pin down what the cause is.. I think I know what it is but I'm not sure and since I've only seen it happen on one model so far cross referencing with yours would be helpful
