Step 4

In "select face" mode (see Figure 4 above) select the polygons on your model that you want to be mapped from the same direction. Once done click "Planar map" with "Average normals" selected.(see Figure 7 above).

Step 5

Bring up the UV editor again and you should see a flat representation of the faces you had selected. It will occupy the maximum amount of space within the enclosed square in the UV editor (see Figure 8 above). Scale and move this projection off to the side of the boxed in area so that it's out of the way and so that it fits more closely to the actual proportions of the faces you had selected (this will help reduce stretching on the final skin - see Figure 9 above).
