yeah i think 2000 is reasonable, but you could probably push it abit further if you needed or wanted to.

there is games that use 2000-3000 poly per player. and alot can be shown on a screen at once. Most people playing generals has computers that can support that many poly. I would not wanna play generals on a computer that cant handle low amounts of poly since it would run really slow. Also if i wanted i could make them 5000 poly for buildings and 2000 for units but that will make it where people who dont have really good computers to be able to play it.

It all depends on what you want. Either you can make evryhting low low poly so that more people can play it including those with slower PCs even if it is a bit slow. Or you could make everything to specifications of your choice.
