What would an Engine License cost?

Smurf thought he read somewhere that the LotR team paid $ 15k~20k, I think that claim misses an 0...

I don't think that EA just lets anyone licence the engine...so they might not have a set price.

I think one of the conditions also is that EA will be the publisher :dead:

Making games is a VERY expensive business, because they also make enormous profits. (if you score a world hit, that is)
Buying a game engine is usually counted in the hundred thousand’s, if not millions of dollars.
If you know that discreet easily asks around 200k to license the GMAX DEV , development version of Gmax, you'll end up with numbers that make your head spin.
This year’s total revenue of the games industry was bigger then what Hollywood produced....

I know of a team of enthusiasts that started working on a game (garage programmers type),. After a few months it was stopped dead in its tracks, because calculations showed they needed 5mil$ to cover wide world release, across different platforms (pc, playstation, etc) It is impossible to release a game on your own these days. The game distributors control the whole market....

^ Well you could sell the game over Internet, I've seen some games that ppl have created and then sold over the net An example: http://www.wounded-heart.com/

SAGE would set you back around $350,000 - but the chances of anyone getting that license are like zilch
