Default First Starting out

just starting out with modeling, and I figured this would be the place to come for advice. I'm cool with the .big files, but what programs do i need to edit the models, skins etc? I'm open to any and all help.

models = gmax with renx addon, or 3d studio max 5/6, etc.
skins = photoshop or any photoediting program your comfortable with.

ah, thanks very much. I have Gmax from awhile ago, I just need renX. And i know photoshop in and out. Thanks a million.

okay, next question, what should I do to open W3D files (I'm assuming those are the models, somebody correct me if I'm wrong) I have RenX and all that fun stuff, but what should I do? where should I go?

RenX includes a program to view w3d models, W3d Viewer. But to view w3d models in gmax, you need a plugin.
