Negative Buildings
no, im not insane. a normal building built would just plop a w3d model on the terrain. is it possible to use the building model to subtract from the terrain? i know this is possible in 3d engines using boolean operations etc but can generals do it? and if so how? the idea is for a trench like building, where the worker is "building" a hole in the ground.

As far I know, it is impossible to have an interaction with the terrain.
That's why the GLA holes are still superimposed, and not dug out…

Yeah, i don't know jack about gmax and other 3d stuff, but I agree with FlyBy.
The Zero Hour engine has limits, and when you find them, it's a sad day.

The best way to simulate trenches would be to create a parapet, and have a top to the trench, instead of trying to dig it in. I know that buildings can level the ground (Dozer preset I believe), but cannot lower it any more than that.

or an easier way, I haven't tried it but it is pretty logical. chang the height of your maps very high, so that its about its highest point, and hten u can dig down from there, but then change hte cmaeras so it fits the levels better

You could always cheat a bit and make the "trench" build up the terrain around it so that it can be dug out of itself...
So you'd build fake terrain into the model of your trench.. and have the "trench" booleaned out of THAT.
It's not a perect solution of course.. since there would be obvious issues with behicles and infantry not running up the slopes around your trench but other than that it should work alright.

If the dozer can level for the building, can you have an invisible chunk of structure "underground", so to level it has to dig down, and simulate a trench sort of? Probably can't work. :S

i thought of doing only the top of the trench for the units to shoot out of, creating the image of a trench, but its not the same. even the dozer digging will only create a perfectly flat peice of land for the building. oh well, i guess well just have to model them into our maps... limits limits....
