What kind of job? Doing what? There's a big difference in what you should be working on with a portfolio based on the position you want to fill. For example, a game company would probably want to see low poly models with proper texturing or for a cinematic position they may want to see higher poly characters and props rigged and fully textured with good lighting and framing.

A special effects company wouldn't have much use for mos tof the above though.

So like Flyby said already, figure out what position you want to apply for and observe what other people are producing as art for those positions, CGTALK.com, CGCHAT.com and others are good for that type of thing.

Another thing worth thinking about it participating in the monthly/bimonthly 3D art competitions on sites like those above. You get a whole crap load of feadback and you'll be forced to try new things under new restrictions

Finally if you want an example of my own effort at making a focused portfolio I can post a link to one I used a few months ago (incidentally Flyby helped me focus it down too so it's kind of pertinent to the situation :P )

I'd highly suggest you listen to what flyby and proclone are saying...since they do this stuff for a living.
