Which is better? Gmax or 3Ds Max 6?? I know there the same company but which is better and why?

GMAX is a stripped down version of 3DSMax 4.

However its been setup for games & its free.

I dont think there's a W3D exporter for 3DSMax at present. So you'll nee Gmax no matter what.

Personally I think that's a weird question.
As sypher said, Gmax is 3DS Max 4 stripped down, and without the rendering engine (that costs the money) but then it is freeware.
3DS Max 6 is the lastest out, and is leagues ahead of gmax in the things it can do, only it costs a lot of money if you buy it. Not that I'm suggesting other methods of aquisition
You can certainly import W3D into 3DS Max, most of the gmax importers being written in MaxScript so they also work in 3DS Max.
I'm pretty sure there's a 3DS>W3D exporter out there somewhere, but the download is more elusive than an individual grain of sand on a beach.

Max6 has a 1 node licence included of MentalRay, one of the leading renderengines that is often used in A-films.
For me, Mentalray has little meaning as I already use Vray for more then a year now. Vray is way faster for GI and raytracing anyway. So mental ray is nice, but not a "I want it" feature.

3500$ is not much if you can make a living on it, or, if you're a graphic student, you can get a student version for much cheaper. They even got a 30day demo now...
