Default Skin Dimension Limitations

When skinning I know most textures end up as 256 x 256, how ever I'm wondering if thats required or if 256 x 512 would work ?

Thanks in advance.

The actualy size doesn't matter, but bigger textures will be more detailed, but have more of a performance hit. I think the texture size restrictions is that it has to be square (so 256x512 wont work) and it needs to be even. At least thats how it works in most other games.

You dont do much skinning for Generals do u?

The muzzle flash along with many other skins are oblong not square.

I think the dimensions dont matter as long as its 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 etc...

No, actually I don't. I just code, bone and animate models. I'm not an artist and can't skin if my life depended on it :P Ya, so the skin dimensions still have to be a power of 2.

yea I remember flyby saying that the texture shape doesn't matter

btw, for most models I tend to keep it at 256x256...and only put 512x512 on the larger ones (and ones which there arn't as many used ingame)

The reason I asked was I noted some buildings had 512 x 256 skins but didn't see any vehicles with them. Wondered if there was a reason.

Just getting to grips with skinning, I was unsure if I needed the turret was skinned separately with its own texture, and hadn't really looked until I got to doing the turret. An oversight on my behalf but I was more interested in getting UVW Mapping set in my mind & I've now got it sorted. So now of course I have the chassis skinned but not the turret. I did the layout for the model with just the mesh of the chassis and didn't make any room for the turret/barrel.

So now I've got to it I'm working on what I need to do. However I did it at 512 x 512 intending to resize it to 256 x 256 before I finished.

Its the Yuri Lasher using the YR install screen as reference, which I know is a shorter length wise model. Everyone keeps bringing up its the wrong dimensions when I used the blueprints on the install screen as reference ( skinned box method ) so I feel its more accurate to the intended model before it was made into a voxel for YR.

My progress so far.

Used the Paladin skin as a base for source "armour textures" and made my own skin for it. The first shot shows how close I've got to replicating the Yuri color scheme. I just cant seem to get it the right color values. Yuri always seems a dark bronze/copper color and shinny to me personally.

I like the model, dont care if you dont

Of course I'm no good at the ini coding as I haven't even looked into the Generals system as I've always been a more of a design oriented modder.

EDIT: I'm intending on getting the front "harvester" spinning like a wheel when it's moving and have yet to add the end spike's, I'm thinking on using hexagon shaped mesh with a transperancy to replicate them. That or tri polies attached off the "harvester". Still not sure.

After I killed 3 errant polies that didn't even show in the model I've got it donw to 247 polies FYI.

EDIT 2: Spelling corrections.

I wanted to get skinning under my belt as I'll be attending ( hopefully ) a game development course for the next two years. As I know I can model, I wanted to make sure I knew UVW Unwrapping aswell.

I chose the Lasher because it was simple and at that time I started it ( This is the second version, I lost the first along with a couple of other neat models with a harddrive failure ) no one was putting Yuri in a mod (only RA2 countries). Thought it may come of some use somewhere to someone and it'll kick off the generals section at PixelOps if no one really wants it.
