I think a couple of the really good coders in the modding community should come together and develop their own installation/patching software for mods. One which can be freely distributed and modified by all mod teams to suit there mod.
As I am and im sure many other people are in need of a good patching software which can edit a big like the EA one does.
Not sure he publicy released the project, but I talked with him some time back about a specific deployment solution for Generals and he came up with something.
I've been thinking about something like this for some time, but I've got a lot of things to do as well. After GenDebug, this is probably the next big thing I would like to do. I would probably make it more a mod selector, but with lots of things like patching and such. It would not be limited to .big files either, but could copy files in and out of the directories, to switch mods.
Malc, if its just a patcher youre after for updates, then Koens vpatch software is good - great compression and it patches at byte-level, looks like thats what youre after
It's not much, but it's something... when my software comes out I plan to include a modulator sort of thing so that any mods created with the software could be "managed" in the sense of file swapping and whatnot.
But, that's a long way away at this rate, so bleh.
