i just thought...
I just thought, i had the exact same problem yesterday, do you get a blue screen when trying to use your pc, probably, well, stick the xp disk in, and set your bios to boot from the xp CD-rom, then wait till it all loads up, don't go on auto-repair when it says on the bottom, wait till the screen were you get to format to install windows, then, it says press R to repair, do this, and type chkdsk /r and it will run a boot check, and fix it.
also you might wanna check your bios, its somthing like prmary VGA trnsfer mode, under advanced settings, change it from AGP to PCI and hopefully it will fix it..
briefly, thats:
try booting from the xp cd > wait for it to fully load, >
dont run the auto-repair like it says at the bottom,
when its loaded it will say about formatting, installing windows .etc >
press R to open the repair console > type:
chkdsk /r
it will check and repair the boot volumes, after about 20 mins, its all good
it may seem like its frozen sometimes, but it hasn't, give it time...
it will probably temporarily fix the problem, but not perminantly,
after 2 or 3 boots, i found it did other errors, such as ACPI erros about updating bios, ignore it, at least you have time to backup,
final solution:
i found a way to perminantly fix the problem on my pc,
i went into the bios and went into advanced options. then it says something like primary VGA mode, set it from AGP to PCI and it should fix it all, it worked for me, worth a try, hd data is never damaged if it is fried on a seagate hd, it has a fail-safe mechanism...
worth a try :P
