You need photoshop with the correct addon to open dds files. As for w3d's you can't really open them theres a importer script for gmax but that is very buggy.

If you want to open .w3d files you will need gmax RenX w3d viewer and a w3d importer

gmax http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/
RenX and w3d viewer ftp://ftp.westwood.com/pub/renegade/...Installer2.exe
a w3d importer can be found on GenDev

Actually the first gmax w3d importer is fine.It imports the meshes and heirachy and UVMapping properly.I know some people dont like not being able to get the aniamtions, but there is no way a W3d file could know HOW I made my aniamtions.

For example, if I rig Inverse Kinetics upto a generals skelton, make my aniamtion but export with a non-modified skeleton, the animation works fine but maxscript will have no idea that I used inverse kinetics if I import the model back to max.All it can do is look at the positional and rotaional properties of the bones. If you dont export the geometry of the bones, then the W3d only has the pivot point referenced, becasue thats all a bone needs.Therefor when you import the bones they are all little diamonds!

Exporting from RenX is easy.Goto File--->Export-->save as type .W3d
