Default "History of CNC Modding"

I am thinking about working on a "History of CNC Modding" article, with it basically going through the years and pointing out the highlights of each game and the mods around it. The problem is, I just don't have a perfect memory and could use some help. I will be updating this topic pretty often, adding more details. The purpose of this is to show our pretty long history...and help give people some insights into how to make a good CNC mod, as well as where we are headed.

Right now I am just going to work on a list of the main events in cnc modding, top mods for each game, etc. KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS IS A WORK IN PROCESS, AND VERY A VERY ROUGH DRAFT

please help me out and post any comments/ideas/additions below!

TD

no ideas here, I wasn't into this too much

RA1
Unit packs were big now...basically where you download files, and add in a unit or two at a time. Some of the most common were using TD units and home made ones like the shotgun tanya.
-RAMixer

top mods:
Desert Storm (only real ra1 mod i played for a length of time)
Nurple's mod maps

TS
TS Gold fiasco
Voxels, we basically spent the entire time figuring out exactly how to use these things. Initially we could only swap turrets and such...but eventually we had voxel editors.

Main community Hub: Blueprint TS for a while
XCC
FinalSun (i think i got the name right)

top mods:
Ts Gold
Ice Storm
Allies Revenge
TS Deezire (came in kinda late in the game though)

Ra2
A much more advanced community than the TS one. This is our first real step into modern modding...with many many mods in the works.
Main community Hub: ra2mods.com
XCC
Final Alert

top mods:
Ra2 Deezire
Eagle
Blitzkrieg 1
Allies Revenge 2
Code Red

Generals
Deezire, RVMECH and EJAH(sp?) getting on the dev team...
INI structure changes...
The first CNC game to go into fully 3d, no more voxels to mess around with...now we have models and skins.
cnccommunity.net - good try, didn't work out
XCC

Main community Hub: dz.net forums, with sleipner's(sp?) coming in at 2nd place...no real mod site for generals

top mods:
Pro:Gen
Blitzkrieg 2
Secondwave
WW3

The Future
speculation...

-----------------------------------------------
I'll also have a big list of links as to where to find more information on the mods and sites. Hopefully this can bring some attention back to the community as a whole...

...someone forgot Renegade.
That was officially C&C remember? It was also fully 3D, although they could have done a lot better...

True, but perhaps its best that way
Honor to be working on what smurf considers one of Generals top mods I only really got into the community at Generals so I don't really know much history with the other games. Maybe cnccommunity.net deserves a mention under Generals history? Although it wasn't nearly successful as was initially thought they still organized that cool Q n A chat with the devs.

i played secondwave and it was pretty cool, now i play progen, BOTH are really cool mods, the only mod i ever played for ra2, was deezire. I refused to play rengade because i thought it broke the traditional strategy game concept of C&C

I am not going to cover renegade, due to the fact that it is an fps...plus, what is there really to say about it? it was made by westwood...they flew out some modders to show off the mod tools, the game wasn't very successful and there never really were many mods for it (i would basically only mention renalert and reborn)

i won't cover dune 2, dune 2000 or emperor either...due to the fact that i can't remember there were any mods for that
renegade doesn't count :P this will be covering the cnc rts games (dune 2, dune 200 and emperor don't count either...not that there were many mods for them)

added in the cnccommunity.net thing

...bleh, is there really THAT few people who've been around longer than generals?

I remember really vaguely that there actually were attempts at map editing and map creation for TD.. though they were kind of testy... external DOS apps that managed to rip apart the early MIX files and if you were lucky let you do something with the maps.. I could never really get them working.. but they were around.. and a number of fan made maps that I couldn't really use since it was pretty hard to get people to take and install the maps properly... TD had a weird system were the maps were sorted by their position in the overall map listing.. that meant that a new map had to the same on both machines AND in addition to that they had to be in teh EXACT same position on the ingame list... neither particularly easy.. especially with not intention for adding new maps to begin with and ESPECIALLY no auto downloading system like RA1 had.

Speaking of RA1 don't forget mod maps, what was that guy's name again who made the really funky mod maps for ra1? Nurm, Norm? NAM, something er other...
