What they're saying is that to view the skin on the model in RenX (and I also think in w3d viewer, someone correct me if i'm wrong) it can't be in dds format. But all you have to do is resave the tga as a dds with the same filename and then only put the dds in the textures folder. the game will read it automatically.

@straxovich - It's not pretty, don't do it

@tesla-chrono - I think proclone's skinning tutorial covers this. Have a quick read of it.

Another way of doing it is using multi pass textures, But that's a complicated way of doing it, I'd just stick to spliting the model up and applying different materials to the different parts.

I would just liek to know the best and quickest way, I got so many models to skin but have not found the right way yet that feels comfortable to me.

Well, the quickest way, as everyone says, is to do them seperatly.
Detach a bit from the rest of the model and give it it's texture, if u decide to re-attach it again, when the attach options dialog appears chose the 'Match Materal to Material IDs' (middle) option, this will combine both textures into 1 Multi Sub Object material.
If you chose the other options you will just end up with 1 texture on both objects.

EDIT= oh yea, and dont weld the vertecies after re-attaching, that'll just screw it right up.

yeah, I dont think I have ever had a problem welding after attaching to object like this.
