WOW,i always wondered how many people have or even knew about the musical version that was released around the winter of 1978 as a double 12 inch orchestrated disco album.
It was very obscure back then.Never even got any radio airplay.
I brought it at a record store that had a section for new but unusal disco music.
That section had disco versions of ROMEO AND JULIET,THE HUNCHACK OF NOTRA DAME,JUDAS AND SIMON PETER,SUPERMAN and about 15 other well known stories...i had just gotten paid that day...i brought them all.
Today my copy still plays as if it came off a cd.
If you listen to it in proper order,it tells the story from start to finish.
Remember this line:
THE CHANCES OF ANYTHING COMING FROM MARS,ARE A MILLION TO ONE...BUT STILL THEY COME
The late Richard Burton narrates through out the song.
What would be cool is to use his opening narration and the first 3 orchestral hits to the shell map.
If you want i can compose a tekno version of that for the shell map intro.
Anyway, this is just an idea,if your going to stick to the original story line then the mod should have the old military units from the late 1800's [ i think thats the era when the invasion takes place].
Since the martians were really powerful and all humanity unites to fight them, then you could make it so that the player has to relie on the second faction to help him during skirmish.
It wouldnt make much sense to fight the martinas and a human faction since the martians regard ALL humanity as their enemys.
That way you can have and need huge armies to attack and defeat them.
I never read the book so i doubt that there were any terrorist factions in it,so you can replace the GLA and use that slot for the martains.
Change the USA and CHINA into all the UK units and eliminate all the superweapons from the human side and modify them for the martians.
Mod the war factories to supply 3 , 4 or more units for the price of one on the human side, since this would be a battle of advanced technology.vs.primitive massive armies.
From what i understand, the BLIZTKREIG team remodeled all the buildings in Generals so maybe you can get permission from them to use them in your mod.that would be closer to reflecting the era of the original story.
Or you could combine the original machines with that of the 1950's movie version so you could have ground and air units.
I do remember that when they were making the 1950's movie version,
they wanted to use some sort of electrical energy running down the legs of the martinan war machines.
[i don't know if that was described in the book] but they could not figure on how to do it with the SFX technology that they had back then.
Don't forget the
RED MIST thats mentioned in the musical version, that kills everything in its path
No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.
With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter.
It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same.
No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable.
It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days.
At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise.
Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us
