What OS for modding?
I have XP PRO and i get crashes from different mods on different maps.
This has happened on both system and user made maps but mostly on user made maps.
Is XP PRO any good for playing and modding Generals or other games or is this something that i should expect when playing mods?
From what i have seen,it looks like Windows 98 is the best OS,but i guess it also has to do with your set up.
RedAlert shows all of the available units under 98 but in ME,i could never build cetain units.
StarShip Troopers has a "SAVE GAME" in 98,in ME there is none and in XP PRO it work work.So what is the OS that most modders are using?
My system is P4 3GHZ
XP PRO
512 MB
NVidia 128MB FX 5200

I use XP Pro. I also use it for gaming, 3D rendering/animation, word processing, etc etc etc. It's the best OS you can get in my opinion... exept that my Auto-Update's not working right, so every wanna-be hacker in the world is pinging my firewall.

Shoudnt matter what OS you use. Generals was developed largely on ME machines.

Have either of you had any crashes with Generals or ZH?
My machine is not even a month old and all i have on it is Generals.
I can't beleive Generals was developed on such a buggy OS.
From the first day i got ME i had problems and it couldnt had been a virus because i wasn't connected to the net.
After 2 installs on 2 different drives all i kept getting was crashes or programs not working properly. 2 of my friends just ditched ME because they spent more time REBOOTING than they didworking on it.

Personally, I hate XP with a passion hot enough to fuel the sun. I use 98 to mod on. I also like 98 because I will still occassionaly play an old DOS game and the are a royal pain in the arse to get to run correctly on XP. (Yep, I still fire up Doom 2 once in awhile)

98 is a bad OS. XP is a little better, but then there's the ram useage. ME is just disgusting. At least XP has many built-in features, better memory management, build on w2k frame, etc.

What then would you consider a "CRAPPY SYSTEM"oobootsy?
Would it be the NVidia FX5200? It can't be the P4 3GHZ because its brand new.
It has to be the OS because i have another game called JETFIGHTER 4 and the system requirerments list XP and i have tried to get this game to work, even using Compatibilty mode and it won't work.
I have even gotten crashes useing the FINALBIG EXTRACTOR.
My point is that there has to be an underlying problem with the Windows line of OS's.How can 2 identical PC's give 2 different results?
A case in point:
2 of my friends purchased a PC from DELL running XP HOME.
At the time that they brought it which was about 2 months apart, they had the same exact system:
P3 1.6GHZ
128MB ram
GForce 2 32MB
RedAlert 2 ran on 1 of them but would not run on the other.
Same thing with music programs,i have DANCE EJAY 4 that works perfect on 98 but dosen't work proper on ME,even though its supposed to work on it.

98se > 98me
w2k > XP
I had a good laugh when I installed XP, for an operating system that supposedly wouldnt crash, Ive never seen so many BSODs in my life
Ive had a few technophobic freinds with 98me, but getting them to 'downgrade' to 98se is like pulling teeth.
Personally I have dual boot 98se/w2k
