Don't worry about the poly count on the tesla tank. As proclone said, that thing is notoriously difficult to keep in general's low poly range.

The coils you can use a 3 sided tube for, it sacrifices the quality, but from the range you see things in generals it shouldn't be noticable.

That tesla tank that proclone posted up is technically low poly, but it isn't generals low poly. It's probably in the 1000-2500 range (<- big range, so sue me).

Personally the best i've gotten trying to make the tesla tank as faithful to the concept art as possible (had to abandon some things like 3 coils instead of 5, and completely abandon the little engine turbine type thing at the back) was 550 polies.

just fake the coils with texture and alpha maps that way u can make a coil only 1 or 2 triangles and at the distance u see it from who cares!!!

besides, those kinds of coils would look better than any attempt to make low poly tourus's anyway.

also u are even able to cut those coil poly's in half even though there only square planes. just make them triangle planes big enough to accomadate the drawing of a circle. the only down side to that is when it come to uvw mappin a big triangle is a little worse than a nice square.
