Default I just got PS 7 and...

I feel like a n00b all over again... I took a look at the tut on Derelect Studios, but it doesn't go into very much detail... there are still a few things I'm confused about

1) it talks about merging layers... the tool is probably right in front of my face, but I can't seem to find it

2) when he says the gradient tool does he mean the gradient tool with all the other tools (like the pencil, and paint bucket) or to apply the gradient overlay layer effect?

3) how do you give something a "shiny" affect in PS... I wan't the cockpit of my Berkut to by like the original gen skins

Let me guess - you didnt bother to click on the 'help' tab in photoshop and then 'search' for merging layers......

I'd play around with the bevel & emboss layer effect.

nope it has to do with having 2 textures/materials applied, one for the units mapping, and one for the reflection http://members.optusnet.com.au/jompwaffle/cockpit.jpg

lol, somehow that nevere crossed my mind... I'm a little overwhelmed here cause I've never used PS before... I feel more like a n00b than when I first joined this site

I know how to make reflections, I guess I wasn't thinkin while a was typing... I meant shinyness... I looked at the Raptor's skin and it had a "checkerboard" type look in the backround... I think I've figured out how to do it using the bevel and emboss tool...

Darkslayer you sound pretty wasted :drunk: could somebody please tell me what the difference is between the two gradients

Step 5:

Shadows

Time to add the "real" shadows. It's true that Generals casts ingame shadows, but you'll quickly notice that those shadows are insufficient to really bring the models to life. In order to trick people into thinking there's more realistic lighting I'm going to use the gradient tool to manually put in shaded areas on all the surfaces. Basically I'm going to make a "shadows" layer on Multiply mode and use friskets to isolate all the faces individually once again, then apply an appropriate gradient based on it's location on the model (i.e. things under the turret cap will be darker than things on the top). Figure 11 shows what I ended up with. The overall darkness of the shadows can be controlled by the opacity of the shadow layer so I'll worry about tweaking it later on, once more details are final.
there

It means the gradient tool. It's used on a different layer from the rest of the image.
