I thought this was a cool idea. Anyone have any idea how he did it? My first thought is that it's just a big plane that has a cloud texture set to Linear Offset to make it move. (If you bother to look at the movie I actually think it is 2 planes, one below the other, textures moving in opposite directions). Thoughts? I'd like to emulate it in some way for Paradise Lost.
Guess it would be hard to make with planes... I wouldn't try it that way... I suppose those clouds have something to do with field objects (like radiation fields or toxic fields), with animated texture (I guess the object itself is immobile). If I would be doing that I would start trying to create a permanent radiation field all over a map. I guess it is possible, since we all have seen such permanent fields in challenge campaign against doctor Thrax, where he had bunkers permanently surrounded by toxin fields... Guess that's it - a high altitude permanent field object with textures animated in a different manner...
No, actually it would be annoying for me as well, despite the fact that two-layered clouds look kinda lame to me... Those clouds are a good example of a case, when modders/developers sacrifice good gameplay to realism... Many good games died that way... Those clouds would be used good for engine based script cutscenes, but not for the game I think...
I personally think that they are too thick as well. (Apparently he plans on doing thicker ones too to force the player to zoom in to actually see what he is doing. Crappy in my opinion) I didn't think of the radiation field idea though, that might achieve a better effect, but it would make it much more difficult to loop the texture animation seemlessly.
