you can do it without unlinking shit.
just click on the object that is deforming, click *Affect object only* and then click Reset: *Transform*/*Size*
then if you align to world it should be no problem.

I have found all the above works and doesn't sometime i have to dealt with a model shipped via internet and fix that stuff. Sometimes not much you can do but go editable mesh and fix stuff.
