The two apps that concern me are 3dsmax and Photoshop. As far as Im aware, max wont run on linux, and any emulation would eat up performance.Photoshop runs best in windows

You can edit the game engine all you want, but it IS illegal. EA claims and has all the rights to it. Simple as that.

Methinks someone needs educating

WINE = Wine Is Not an Emulator

WINEX = WINEX Is Not an Emulator with directX libraries

Since Linux86 and Windows both run on the x86 platform (ie: i386/Pentium/K*/Athlon) there is no need to emulate anything, all you need to do in order to get windows apps to run on Linux is to provide them with the libraries, software and hardware calls, and application framework

And IRT 3DS....

Since 3DS uses OpenGL instead of Direct3D, you can probably get it to work with WINE/WINEX.... I haven't seen anything on t'internet that specifically rules out Linux/3DS compatibility

Use Maya, its waaaay more powerful, and was built from the start for UNIX (SGI's IRIX), its what Pixar and Digital Extremes use, go figure

'Nuff said

3dsmax r6 and above require win2k/xp and explorer 6+.I very much doubt that trying to run it on linux would have any advantagde or Im sure the bright sparks who work with it professionally would have made it common knowledge by now.

Mayas advantadges stem from the fact that it is easier to fit into production pipelines due to its more robust scripting language, and ease of writing plugins(by comparison to 3dsmax).

3Dsmax has a very robust set of modelling tools, quite capable animation tools, it comes with two good renderers(if I want pixars renderman Im sure I could use it too)its user interface is way more intuitive, and I like it Yes I do plan to learn Maya among other software, but when I have not yet pushed the limitations of the software Im using, theres not much point changing over really.Plus, while I like the work of pixar etc, its not what interests me the most, hell I only saw shrek 2 and a bunch of other modern animated kids movies this last week while I was looking after my 6 year old niece - I just dont watch movies

Anyway, I think we have gone way enough off topic!

AFAIK, Dreamwork's 3D animation studios use Lightwave

Although, I guess using 3DS for Mod development is fair 'dos... after all, 3DS is designed for game development and particles/special effects dev, not for rendering and visualisation, unlike Maya

Lightwave is more like Maya, but not as as good

Although I do like Lightwaves "modelling" and "positioning" separation concepts, results in a less cluttered UI and speeded-up workflow
