In any case, EA took numerous measures to prevent anybody releasing stuff - copy-proof discs, dedicated machines, dongles etc etc etc. Plus I had to send everything back to them recorded, piece by piece.

It's only expected. Currently, I am reading a book called "Breaking into the game industry" by Ernest Adams, and I read a section about legal rights and so on. Basically, the employee signs a contract and all their work belongs to the company.
The funny thing is that at the time when they are working at the company, they can't make any games of their own if they use the company's facilities, code, and so on.
Interesting read, if you want to work on video games (like me

There is no such thing as secure DRM or copy-proof discs

If someone can read the entire data of the disc, you can make a copy of it

And dongles can easily be overridden with the help of kernel mode drivers

But I guess EA employees work under a tightly controlled AD/GP environment (if on Windows), which explains why they're not very creative

True, but some protection is better than nothing.
