Default Texture Problem (yes im a noob :) )

I checked the search function but maybe i overlooked the thread where this is described, cause im pretty tired....so sorry if someone already asked this...

I checked the big files and there contents and i figured (correct me if im wrong) that the infantry textures are the .tga files in the textures.big

But if i change a tga file (i changed colonel burton - removed the old and added the new file with the "FinalBIG" tool), the texture is the old one again as soon as i start the game...

place the tga file in ur generals dir/Art/Textures
or you mgiht have to change it to dds

there is no art/textures directory....there are the .big files that contain such directories. But I already placed the file there

What I did:
1) Extracted the .tga file from the textures.big

2) Edited the .tga file like i wanted

3) Deleted the .tga file in the textures.big and added my new edited .tga file instead of it in the same position

but the texture is still the old one

u have to put it in Art/Textures if there isnt 1 make 1

but...why is the head and all the other parts where there used to be skin now blue? i didnt change the face and the face is blue now too
