New to playing Mods, need some help.
Hi Deezire forum,
Nice place you guys got here. I was referred here via links from other C&C sites and just recently began playing mods for Zero Hour. Anyways, I was wondering if there is any site that allows peole to download individual units for Zero Hour without having to download the entire mod. I do like some features in some mods, but sometimes they do things I would rather not have. Is there a way of removing what you don't like and only keeping what you do?
For example, there is this one mod that allows the US General to buy laser tanks, but they only kill infantry. I think that is pretty useless. This mod also made building laser turrets, Patriot Missles and other buildings super expensive.
I looked thru the FAQs and didn't find anything about downloading only individual units, so I thought it was time to finally join you guys and ask, as well as find out what other cool things you can do with the Zero Hour engine.

Well , in my experiences , if you want something done your way , it is best to build it your way , start modding my friend , and you will soon have your result.

Hello again,
RedLeader - those models look amazing, thanks for the links.
Goblinsleez - I would definitly like to mod this game, but I really don't know much about modding. I can use 3-D Max a little, I work in Adobe Photoshop all day, but aside from a little bit of Macromedia Director Lingo, I don't have any programming experience.
Anyways, I've downloaded some of the models and was wondering where all the files go? There are TGA files, W3D files, and configuration setting text files. The models did not come with instructions on where to put them, so hopefully this isn't too much of a newbie question. Thanks for your help.

The .tga files are the skins for the models, and they go in the game directory under Art-->Textures. The .w3d files are the models themselves, and they go in the game directory under Art-->W3D. A lot of these folders don't seem to exist by default, because most of the game files are in .big directories, so you have to make the folders yourself. Now, as I'm sure you're aware the .tga's and .w3d's are just hard drive filler without the appropriate code in the appropriate .ini files (which are all in .big's as well, but would go in the game directory under Data-->INI ... you'll have to extract the game INI files with a .big extractor before you can add anything to them). Hope that helps!

Yup, that would definitly be helpful, but it seems like I would end up spending a lot more time modding the game than actually playing it. That would be cool if you're into that sort of thing like you guys are, but I guess I was thinking it would be a more simple method like putting a few files in the right places, loading 'er up and playing it. From the looks of it, you could be spending a few hours messing around with the INI files, getting marquees to work, etc before you could actually play it. Probably not for me.

not to worry, once you get an idea of what it involves, just start off swapping weapons and if you like change their art (simply give the new model name instead of the old, oh and btw, modles with _D on them are the damaged versions).

Small changes such as those you request are actually incredibly quick and easy with ini editing; its anything remotely complex or useful that is difficult because of the inflexibility O_o
