Default Editing effects and animations of the particle cannon

Mmkay I used to be really into editing and making mods for generals about a year ago till I quit and and lately Ive been wanting to come back to modding. I know the basics and everything but I pretty much lost all knowledge of editing particle effects and animations. Lately I have been wanting to edit the beam effects of the particle cannon. The thing is Im not exactly sure how to do it because Ive lost all prior knowledge of it.
What I want to do though is that instead of a regular particle beam that comes down and destroys everything I want to make about 8 different beams come down at the same time in an octagonal shape and quickly rotate in a circle then make a large flare emerge from the middle of circle indicating the explosion and the end of the attack.
I know its alot but If anyone would be so kind as to give me a few pointers as to where to go with it I would appreicate it.
