Skinning
I just made my first model (meh), a tank, and i need to skin it now, and am finding it alot more difficult then modelling.
I have followed the stickied tutorial up to a point (and i found this difficult because the links to all the files are broken, and i had to find them myselves and didnt know what they were o_O).
I have used the program to flatted and arrange all the polys, and create a UVWunwrap, but i dont know which bit goes where :S they are all the same, and their names are just Object01, so i cant define between them. Im just wondering, if there is any sort of secret or technique i have missed or am missing? I think painting a skin will be easy if i can just make this map
Heres a picture of the UVWunrap

omg...that is quite a lot of parts, is it also possible to post your model here? I would like to see it. The only advice i really have is to apply the skin first then move bits and parts as you go to see how it looks...

Wow, waht do you mean its not very good, i think its awesome...i cant wait to see what it look like once we get it skinned...
Oh also, tell me your method of skinning, did you highlight all parts of the tank, and go to Modifiers/UnwrapUV or did you just select one part at a time and go to Modifiers/UnwrapUV?

well i did that method in the stickied post, it was umm this MAXscript think that did some stuff lol
Chilliskinner
you select the polys, then attach em, then detach em then clone em, then unfold em, then arrange them, then apply a planar map. Then attach em all together, then make editable mesh - and add the modifier UVWunrap..

WOW...see all i do is this...i select 1 part that i want to skin at a time...so lets take the chassis of your tank for instance. I select the chassis then go to Modifiers/UnwrapUV.
then on the right side on the palette, the unwrapuv menu pops up. I then go to edit.
After going to edit, the skinning menu pops up, i then go to pick texture from the top rollout menu, i go to bitmap from the new window, find my and open my texture, go back to the pick texture menu, click the little circle next to applied, find my texture in the applied menu, select my texture, click the apply button [top right corner, looks like square with a arrow emmiting from it], and then move the vertices around however fit...

ok i gonna try that method now... when you uvwrap it will create one of those grey box things and i can use that as a template to make a skin on?
And do u select vertices or faces?
