Default Requesting Assistance In Using gMax (NOW WITH PICS!)

ok, i followed the the guide posted at killasmods to build a tank using gMax but it all went horribly wrong, instead of moving the middle of the model

see here

and here is how it's supposed to look Linkage

I somehow seem to grab the top of the model rather than the middle, following the instructions exactly (as far as i can tell)
edit: Here is my attempt at the same point Linkage

hmmm.....I guess what i'm asking for is if someone could possible help me get the hang of gMax to build a small, simple looking tank similar to the one shown above.

I apologise for being a boring newbie, but we all have to start somewhere, i have tried searching for tutorials on the web but they don't explain the basics well enough

Thank's for reading, all help is greatly appreciated.

I asked killa to shed some light on this, but good job for finding the 'well known' tutorials. You don't know how many newbies come here and ask 'how do I model' without looking first...

This is a simple mistake, but all part of the learning curve.
You're going right so far, but you're moving the edge on the wrong axis.
If you right click on the top viewport, drag the axis arrow that's pointing up or down in the viewport.
The active axis arrow turns orange (a very important note to remember). When an axis is active, your selection will only move in that direction.

CodeCat - thank's for the kind words, i read a few posts here before joining and posting myself, i saw the "how do i model" posts and knew i had to research this myself properly.

Killa - thank's for the reply, wierd thing is, thru your tutorials, it apepars you move the X-axis, which is what i was doing, but for me to achieve the same result, i had to move the Z-axis.

This confuses me, as i thought i read that the x axis = left and right, y axis = up and down and z axis = in & out (or something)....

NOTE: Actually, upon reviewing what i just did, i realised that i had to move the X-axis in the lower left viewpoint, if i tried moving the x-axis in teh upper right, it led to my catastrophic results.

I would like to extend my appreciation for your reply once more, i have learned something here this evening that i will not forget, now i can move on and finish the tutorial.

P.s: Killa - in my link to your page in my first post, one of the images is not linked correctly, the thumbnail for fig9, the url points to http:///

In Generals, the X axis points towards the front of the model. Y points to the right, and Z points up. You should make your models like this too, so that they face properly ingame.

Ahh, that's where i got mixed up. Ok, i rotated my model so it now faces the correct way. I`m doing pretty well now i got over that first hurdle, onto making the turret and barrel.

I`ll probably go to bed shortly, but i expect to have this model finished for tomorrow (just the model, will work on textures, etc another day)

Thanks for the heads up. I'll fix that when I get home later this week.

Default my first tank!

ok. it's nothing special, but thought i'd post pics here anyway.

i added a little detail to the turret but considering i only installed gmax and renx for the first time about 7 days ago, it hink it's not a bad start!

Kudos go to killakanz and CodeCat for their assistance and some more kudos to killakanz for the tank tutorial!

nest step, boning then skinning!
