There is no need for that behavior. Also you asked if anyone has done something similar, I informed you about Xenoforce (since they have transformations). This thread is now obsolete...
It has special laser drones (build using the button that looks like paladin in the America war factory) that transform into laser cannon buildings. The buildings can transform back into drones to relocate to a new place.
