Default Generals Registry Entries

Im usign InstallMaker to make a installer for my mod, but what I need to do is find the My Documents/Command and Conquer Generals Data/ folder, it is in a different place depending on your OS. Ive found a key which has the route to the documents but what I need to know is if there is a key which goes directly to the Command and Conquer Generals Data directory, or if anyone who's used installmaker knows of a way to add extra directory info after you put in a reg key.

All you need to do is specify the users' documents folder in your installer - it should be able to detect the location for the default My Documents folder if its any good as its classed as a system folder like C:\Windows (root directory) or C:\Windows\System (system directory).

Why would you want to use an installer to put something in there?

The documents folder in windows 98 is in c:\my documents but in XP its in Document and Settings\User\My Documents\ the reason why I need to put files in there is because if you want to install a mod the proper way in Generals then it has to be in the Command and Conquer Data folder which is in My Documents.

If thats all you want it to do, just ask the user to unzip it there. IMHO an installer would be overkill and in this case could actually cause more problems than its addressing

If youre going to stick with it, you could put a default install path of C:\My Documents but get the user to verify the path is correct and browse for the right one if not.

The reason why im putting in a auto install is that so many people find it hard to install maps, most people don't bother reading the readme so they try putting the maps in any odd place and then I get emails when it doesn't work. I fear it will be worse with a mod. Also using the -mod command line means that the user would have to create a shortcut with a specfic target the auto installer can do that for them.

If I coudn't find a way to get it to find the Command and Conquer Data Generals Direct then I was just going to put a message next to the directory select telling the user to select there Command and Conquer Generals Direct but it would be much simpiler of that was already selected.

The 'user data leaf' folder, i.e. the one that Generals creates, is always created in 'My Documents'. As you said, on Win9X its always C:\My Documents but on later OSs its on a per-user basis.

The location of that is not held in the Generals registry keys as its not generated by Generals - its a system folder, so Generals' installer simply checks the OS version, grabs the right location, and creates the folder there.

The folder will always be in the users My Documents folder, so unless your installer can detect that location on a per-OS and per-user basis then youre stuck to defaulting to C:\My Documents and hoping that users with Win2K and XP remember to change that to their own unique folder - which as I said, is probably just as, if not more, confusing than just unzipping it there.
