Default Easy to use guide for changing headers in BIG files

This tutorial is no longer of use. Both XCC and FinalBig can now open and save the B4ME BIG files. Do NOT try this for fun, as you dont need it.

Download XVI32 from this page.

Open INI.big with it.

You'll see two windows, on the left something unintelligable, the HEX, on the right normal characters. The first four letters are BIG4. Change the 4 into a F so it reads BIGF

Now XCC Mixer and finalbig can read it.

I dont think I can make it easier.

Simple enough. I wonder why they made that change. Just to add a small irritation BTW your color tags are a bit screwed.

I've done these changes as well and it works (for my INI.big at least). But there must be some reason why they changed it... must be some incompatibility somewhere... right?

I've found no problems yet, and I'm using the edited header .big files with the game to play skirmish and campaign modes. I'm not sure if they changed it to mess with the modders or if it was just something to make them different from the C&C Generals files.

It's open source, you could've done the same.

Never actually compiled a C++ source...

Got a Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 CD with a Computer architecture course I followed on the VU, but never got around to compile anything with it, the VU only instructs in Java untill the 3rd year, where you get Assembler and C (I think).

So... =\

Just wanted to remind you all, that with the release of BFME patch 1.01, you have to change the BIGF back in to BIG4 or the patch will give you an error.
