thanks, so far I've tried the following:

My path is E:\Documents and Settings\sy\Application Data\My Battle for Middle-earth Files

1) I put the Ogres.big file in this folder and tried launching with:
"E:\Program Files\EA Games\The Battle for Middle-earth (tm)\lotrbfme.exe" -noshellmap -preferLocalFiles

No effect.

2) I tried:
"E:\Program Files\EA Games\The Battle for Middle-earth (tm)\lotrbfme.exe" -noshellmap -mod Ogres.big

No effect.

3) I tried renaming the Ogres.big to INI.big and then repeating 1 and 2.

No effect.

Have I missed something? I thought all I had to do to add a faction was add the faction to the PlayerTemplate.INI.

I'm not sure at this time if my files are getting used or not.

It sounds like you have the classic asset.dat problem Sy - see the thread on it for details.

The christmas present one is the one you need. It tells you that it's being worked on... and that tonight I have had the first working edited asset.dat ever. I'm posting to the other thread right now

I managed to get my INI's to work this morning. This is what worked for me:

"E:\Program Files\EA Games\The Battle for Middle-earth (tm)\lotrbfme.exe" -noshellmap -mod Ogres.big

Putting the Ogres.big file in the path:

E:\Documents and Settings\sy\Application Data\My Battle for Middle-earth Files

As far as I can tell the asset.dat file has nothing whatsoever to do with the INI's and only relates to the textures and w3d files.

I did read the asset.dat thread and I suggest that when you create such threads in future you consider that the readers of these threads do not know what you know when you create the thread, so assume nothing and explain why it is needed as I could not see any explaination. Thank you.

Sy, you are right. The asset.dat is only for textures and W3D files. INI files work inside a BIG file as long as it is in the location you described. I did post that location a few posts up though...
