I sometimes wonder if I miss things in obvious places. Has anyone else had any luck finding the cameos? I might just be looking too hard...

I'm no fool, I've looked everywhere. It's not there. Unless they are on the source disk? Game reads from the disc maybe?

How do you access .DAT files?

I use a hex editor to open them, and then just more or less read them, or use its search function. I use Hex Editor 2.0. It should be easy enough to find with Google. I might put it on a site somewhere soon though.

Edit: I think I've ruled out the CD, as there doesn't seem to be anything there that isn't copied by the installer.

AdmiralGT found some cameos in the art/textures folder. Does anyone know where I can get a plugin that will allow preview thumbs in TGA format for windows?

As is the case with most modern games, nothing whatsoever is read from the CD. It's just required to be in the drive because game publishers are idiots.

(I crack all my games, it helps save battery life on my laptop).

http://www.xnview.com/

It doesnt preview them in windows, but if you run it and then look in the desired folder it thumbnails all the images in that folder whether tga, dds, jpeg, bmp.

Oh, and all the cameos appear to be in Textures.big under buildingradialbutton_0xx.dds for some unknown reason and then hscharactername_001.dds for the character buttons. They dont seem to be all grouped together this time, rather dotted all over the place.

Interesting. The game refers to the files as *.tga, yet reads them as *.dds. All of the INI files refer to *.tga.

<shrugs> There isn't a huge amount of difference between targa and NVidia's newer DDS's anyway :P

It still makes it more challenging to find files when they are listed by one name but actually exist as another.

Generals did that with particle system textures as well. All the code pointed to tga files that were actually their dds counterparts. The engine appears to only care about the filename, not the file extension.
