It actually does look for the .tga file, but the .dds, if found, takes priotity over the .tga. Models work the same way: you can't apply a .dds but if you apply the .tga of the same filename it'll find the .dds and use it instead.

I thought .DDS files were EA proprietory types. I didn't not know that.

Nah, why would NVidia make tools for dds if they were EA's property
