Default Raising the guard range for specific units?

I've looked and looked on so many Generals and BFME forums and found only references to 'visionrange' or editing the aidata.ini but all I want to do is raise the guard range for certain units. Something I never understood was why did they make the guard radius for missle units less than the actual range of their weapons... and what was the deal with the Ranger's guard range in Generals, they did the same thing with the Gondor soldier infantry unit in BFME.

You can change the guard range right?

I take it either this is so simple it doesn't merit response OR no one has yet figured it out and all are waiting for someone to explain it.

The guard range defaults to taking the objects' PRIMARY weapon range - it cant guard an area if it cant shoot within it...

But what about melee units? Their guard areas are huge compared to their weapon ranges.

Take care.
