Default [RA2/YR] Adding Snow To Buildings

This tutorial will show you how to add snow to your buildings for temperate levels using photoshop, for this tutorial I will not be using a building but a black canvas this helps show up the snow effect but can reduce the quality at the same time.

One a blank layer select the area you need to cover with snow (ie. where snow would fall and settle on the building) once selected set your foreground colour to black and your background colour and go filter->render->clouds.

Your should be left with this:

Now without deslecting fill a new layer above our clouds with white and lower the opacity to around 65% and you should have this:

Next choose the splatter brush:

You may need to alter the brush size (I use around 150px) and on a new blank layer (again without deselecting) put blobs onto the canvas with a light grey (I used #E7E7E7) do this by choosing a spot and clicking once without moving the brush, make sure you have a nice coverage of grey like this:

Now on another new layer (again without deselecting) do the same but with a light icey blue (I used #D2F7FF) I found it's best to have slightly more blue then grey, once done your snow should look like this:

And repeat this process again on another new layer (without deselecting) using white, make sure there is more white then the other two colours and once done you should have roughly this so you have white with a little colour showing through:

Now without deslecting merge your snow layers together so they are on one layer and go filter->blur->gaussian blur and use a setting of between 2.5 and 3.5 then duplicate this blurred snow layer so you have this:

Next deselect you image and go Image->Rotate Canvas->90o CW and with the bottom snow layer selected go filter->stylize->wind... and change the settings to blast and from the right, repeat this again if need be by doing the same again or pressing CTRL+F then go Image->Rotate Canvas->90o CCW and duplicate our new layer. Make the original iccicle layer invisible and with the duplicate selected go filter->blur->gaussian blur and use about 2. You should be left with this:

Now select the top layer (this should be the original blurred snow layer) and using the eraser tool set to brush fade out the lower edges to remove that line so you have this:

Now make our original iccicle layer visible again and lower the opacity to around 20% this makes some of the iccicles more defined like this:

Now merge our snow layers together again (best using merge all visable layers and making non snow layers invisble) and use the eraser tool to soften the edges of the snow where there are no iccicles like this:

Finally touch up the image by lowering the opacity a bit and on the layer above add shadows and highlights to your snow.
