Default This is a strange problem...

Hey guys, I have almost finished my mod and I have a wierd problem. When you have constructed all structures in the game, and thus have access to building all vehicles/ships and aircraft, the test strings do not appear on the sidebar. I mean, when you place the cursor over the vehicle tab in the sidebar, you usually see a text dexrptions of the unit with it's cost. But after having so many new vehicles in my mod, when you have the maximum number of vehicles available the text no longer displays. But when the vehicles are built, the text does display when you place the cursor over the newly created vehicle.

I have heard of a problem when, in the Rules file, the vehicletype list exceeds 99 and the game crashes or something. But I don't ahve 99 units in the list, only about 90.

Can anyone help me out? It's frustrating when you can't see the price of a vehicle!

Well what you heard was right and wrong if you exceed 100 the AI will just build units without ever attacking and your problem is probly some messed up little problem.

Your problem does sound odd. All I can suggest is that you go through all your new units and check their string table entries (plus any existing strings you may have changed).

When you say 'all units' are you includeing all allied/sov/yuri and country specials? Maybe there is a genuine issue that noone's noticed before...

What comp are you running the game on? (Pointly, how much RAM)

Do strings display when you hover over units?

OK, I'll go into more detail about the problem. It may indeed be a new problem.

My mod is called Whiteboy's Rules. Some of you may have heard of it. Version 1 is pretty inferior to 1.5 though. Well I am finishing off version 1.5 and I have this problem. I am talking about the vehicles tab in the sidebar. In this mod, I have made it possible to build ALL units, if each side constructs enough buildings they can build an ARMAGEDDON ENGINE which then allows them to build another side's MCV, and hence thay create another base, another Armageddon Engine, and the final MCV. This makes it possible to have all 3 faction's bases and units under your command.

Now, you know when you place the cursor over the sidebar, you see the string and cost for that unit. Well it works just fine for this mod in one case: you have all units available to build in the vehicles sidebar. Then the strings do not appear. The strings will still appear if you hover the cursor over the units in the battlefield view, however.

I have concluded that this is because of the amount of units in the sidebar, because whenever a structure such as a Repair Depot is sold (making less units available), the strings re-apper again. I am sure all strings work because I have seen them all appear separately, just not all together. And I did not exceed the total units allowed in the vehicletypes list in the Rulesmd.ini file.

Hope that clears some things up. I would send someone the mod, but it's only beta and I plan to finish it soon anyway, look out for it at www.angelfire.com/ultra/whiteboysrules

One thing I haven't done is test it on another computer - my comp. has three hundred and sixty something RAM so no problem there, but the processor is only 500MHz. I think I'll test it on my other computers - in the meantime, any thoughts?[/b]

Well, no solution, just a comment: My mod has a lot of units added, and if you get all techs, you can quite easily have 80 units or something in the sidebar (all minus the side-specific ones) – yet I never encountered this problem before.

Therefore, I personally would take three possible causes into account:
1. Your memory. Like Arg hinted, perhaps your machine just runs out of it; might especially be the case when there are lots of animations and particles with translucency on the field.
2. You game. Did you patch to the latest version? Or perhaps you just fragged your game in another way...very unlikely, but still possible.
3. Your rules. It might sound very general, but if it's neither your machine nor your game, it can only be the tags you added to the original rules.

Although I pretty much doubt you could create something like that via simple code bugs. Memory is the most reasonable explanation atm. I suggest testing the mod on a different machine. (Don't you have any beta-testers you could bother with this? )

Yeah, it has to be memory. I doubt the rules or the game is wrong, but perhaps Yuri's Revenge was designed to only support 80 or so unit strings in the sidebar. i am sure my comp. meets the specs in the manual. I also have installed the patch.

I have a small army of beta testers but half of them disappeared - something about them being too busy. They're just lazy well anyway, I will test on another machine and if the same bug occurs, I'll tell you guys. It would mean that I have discovered a rare and obscure fault in Yuri's Revenge!

So watch this space!
