I'm going to test an animated AlphaImage today. If it works, you will be able to make fake spotlights. Unable to lock on an enemy unit, but still cool.
Otherwise, no, TS spotlight controls don't work in RA2/YR.

Animated alphas does not work I tested that quite some time ago. You will end up with no light at all when using more than one frame and the alpha is stuck on the same spot even if you give it to an moving object.

AliG, have you read my link about it? It's a specially painted SHP, whose color indexing data is used to darken/lighten the area around the owning object.
Only problem I noticed was that projectiles' trailers are affected by this recolor as well, so the already bright line trails turn out very dark (color overflow).
