Configs are saved in ra2md.ini in your folder. You explode after 1 Minute (or similar) because your registry is tainted – as D said, you have to reinstall.

If your configs are broken and that's why you want them copied, a new one will be generated by the installation process anyway; if it's fine, you can save it and copy back into your folder after you patched the game.

Remember to save your savegames and custom maps as well.
